Via Ferrata in Wachau / Waldviertel

5 ferratas
A–B/C grades

The Wachau, the Danube valley between Melk and Krems, and the neighbouring Waldviertel are Lower Austria's main area for climbing on crystalline rock rather than limestone. The crags rise above the river among vineyards and castle ruins, with the Hoher Stein and the Vogelberg near Dürnstein as the two big sectors, plus the Schlucht. In the Waldviertel hinterland, smaller crags such as those at the Hahnmühle and Reismühle offer quiet climbing in wooded valleys. The rock is mostly gneiss, quite different in character from the limestone south of Vienna.

The Wachau is about an hour from Vienna via Krems, and there are railway stations along the Danube; approaches to most sectors are short. The low, sunny crags are best in spring and autumn and combine well with a visit to the wine villages.

Part of Lower Austria, Wachau / Waldviertel has 5 via ferrata routes documented on climbing.place. Routes are listed below with difficulty and community notes.
