The Gutenstein Alps between the Vienna Basin and the Schneeberg are, thanks to the Hohe Wand, one of the most important climbing areas for Viennese climbers. The Hohe Wand is a limestone plateau above the Vienna Basin whose walls, up to around 150 m high, hold hundreds of sport and traditional routes of every grade, from easy slab climbs to hard modern lines. Around it, smaller limestone crags such as the Hausstein, the Prossetwand, the Hauptwand and the Motzwandl offer quieter alternatives with their own character.
The Hohe Wand is about an hour's drive south of Vienna; the plateau can be reached by road, with short approaches to many sectors. Thanks to the low altitude, the main seasons are spring and autumn, while midsummer can be hot on the sunny walls. Some sectors may have seasonal closures; always check the individual sector pages.
