The Känzele Klettersteig, particularly its D/E variant, near Bregenz, Austria, offers an exceptionally thrilling and demanding climbing experience. It's crucial to clarify that while the overall Känzele system might include easier sections, the D/E variant is *far* from a 'grade C' route; it squarely places itself in the very difficult to extremely difficult category.
This highly exposed route demands excellent arm strength, supreme mental fortitude, and an absolute head for heights. You'll encounter very steep, often overhanging sections, requiring precise footwork, powerful pulls on the steel cable, and efficient use of the artificial aids (rungs, pegs). The intensity is relentless, offering little respite.
The reward for such intense effort is unparalleled: breathtaking panoramic views over Lake Constance (Bodensee), the city of Bregenz, and the expansive Rhine Valley stretching into Switzerland. Climbing this D/E variant is a true test of nerve and physicality, providing an immense sense of accomplishment at the summit.
Standard via ferrata equipment (harness, via ferrata set, helmet, sturdy climbing shoes, and gloves) is absolutely essential. Due to its extreme difficulty and exposure, this variant is recommended only for highly experienced via ferrata climbers who are comfortable with sustained strenuous climbing and significant exposure. The descent typically involves a hiking trail back down from the top of the Känzele.
