Climbing the Schmiedsteig, Max Klettersteig, Moritz Klettersteig, and the Brunnbachsteig (variant D/E) offers a diverse and thrilling via ferrata experience in the Austrian Alps, typically located in the Dachstein region or Salzkammergut near Gosau. While the Schmiedsteig, Max, and Moritz Klettersteigs are generally rated B/C, making them excellent choices for intermediates, the Brunnbachsteig, particularly its D/E variant, presents a significantly more challenging and exposed climb, suitable only for experienced via ferrata enthusiasts with appropriate gear and a good head for heights.
The routes provide breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, including the majestic Dachstein massif, the Gosau valley, and sometimes glimpses of alpine lakes. You can expect varied terrain: vertical sections with ladders and rebar, exposed traverses, and thrilling cable-protected rock climbing. Each route offers its unique character, from the more approachable Schmiedsteig to the athletic demands of the Brunnbachsteig D/E.
The overall experience is one of progression and adventure. It's common for climbers to combine these routes, perhaps starting with the easier ones to warm up before tackling the more demanding D/E section. The descent usually involves well-marked hiking trails, leading back to the valley or the starting point, allowing for reflection on the challenging yet rewarding ascent.
