The Dachstein Westgrat (West Ridge) is a classic and exposed climb in the Austrian Alps, graded B (or sometimes II/III UIAA). It's a fantastic introduction to longer alpine ridges, offering a rewarding experience for climbers with some basic mountaineering experience. The route involves a mix of scrambling, easy rock climbing, and some exposed traverses. Good weather is essential, as the ridge can be dangerous in wet or icy conditions. A helmet, harness, rope, and appropriate footwear are mandatory. While the climbing itself is not technically difficult, route finding can be tricky in places, especially in poor visibility. Be prepared for a long day, and remember to take in the stunning panoramic views of the surrounding Dachstein massif!
