Wettiner Steig

Climbing the Wettiner Steig, a challenging D-grade via ferrata in Saxon Switzerland, is an unforgettable adventure. Known for its thrilling exposure and unique sandstone formations, the ascent typically begins with a scramble up a rocky gully before the real vertical challenge starts. We encountered numerous iron ladders, sturdy rungs, and fixed steel cables that guide you upwards. Sections are quite strenuous, requiring arm strength and a good head for heights, especially on the more vertical and exposed parts. The views opening up are truly breathtaking, revealing the iconic table mountains and the vast forests of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. Reaching the summit, often part of the Schrammsteine group, provides a magnificent sense of accomplishment and panoramic vistas.

The return journey is usually via a well-marked, often scenic, hiking trail. This path can still be steep and rocky in places, but offers a welcome contrast to the verticality of the ascent. It winds through the characteristic sandstone landscape, allowing for reflection on the exhilarating climb, eventually leading back to the starting point or a nearby trail junction.
