The Lackenkopfwand lies high up the Maltatal on the Malta-Hochalmstraße, just before the tunnel above the Gmünder Hütte (car park at 1,230 m), and is only three minutes' walk along the old road. It is a south-facing gneiss slab 15–35 m high in a quiet setting with real high-mountain atmosphere, very well bolted and popular with lovers of technical mid-grade slab climbing – there are few powerful or bouldery lines. Several routes carry names from Don Quixote (Rosinante, Sancho Pansa, Don Quihotte).
The Malta-Hochalmstraße is a toll road from May to October; outside that period driving up to the car park is tolerated. The crag is not rain-safe but child-friendly.
Part of Ankogel Group, Lackenkopfwand has 23 routes documented on climbing.place. Routes range from grade 5+ to 8+/9-. Routes are listed below with grade, style, and community notes.
Often climbed in April, May, June.
