The 'Himmelsleiter' (Stairway to Heaven) route on the Hochschwab South Face (Südwand) is a true classic of Austrian alpine climbing. Graded UIAA 5-, it offers a long and exposed journey up the impressive limestone wall. The name itself perfectly describes its character: a seemingly endless ladder of rock leading directly skyward.
While the individual pitches are generally moderate (mostly 4-5-), the sheer length of around 350 meters (10-12 pitches) and the consistent exposure make it a demanding undertaking. Climbers will find excellent rock quality with solid holds and features, but the route requires careful route-finding, efficient multi-pitch technique, and good endurance. The climb is a full-day commitment, with the approach and descent also adding to the adventure.
Reaching the higher pitches and especially the summit after navigating the 'Himmelsleiter' provides an immense sense of accomplishment. The views from the top are breathtaking, encompassing the vast Hochschwab plateau and the surrounding Styrian peaks. It's a must-do for alpine rock enthusiasts looking for a memorable and challenging adventure in a stunning natural setting.
