Climbing the 'Sportmuffelweg' on the Röthelstein, specifically on the 'Breite Wand' (Breiter Wandflucht) in the Röthelstein SE spur, is a classic and highly enjoyable multi-pitch sport climbing experience rated UIAA Grade V. The route is renowned for its excellent, mostly solid limestone and good bolting, making it a popular choice for climbers looking for a moderately challenging yet rewarding day out.
The approach typically involves a scenic hike, often from the Ramsau am Dachstein or Filzmoos area, to the base of the impressive Breite Wand. The climb itself offers a variety of pitches, featuring slabs, cracks, and sometimes steeper sections, all well-protected with bolts. While graded V, it's considered a friendly route at this level, allowing climbers to focus on movement and enjoy the magnificent views that unfold with every meter gained. Belay stances are generally comfortable.
Upon topping out the climb, you often reach a ridge or directly the summit area of the Röthelstein, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding Dachstein massif and the Ennstal valley.
The descent is usually via the well-marked Normalweg (normal route), a hiking trail that leads down from the summit back towards the starting point or valley. This descent is straightforward and offers further opportunities to enjoy the alpine scenery. The entire endeavor – approach, climb, and descent – typically makes for a full and memorable day in the mountains.
