Via Ferrata in Upper Austria

57 ferratas

A–E grades

Upper Austria's climbing lies mostly in its limestone south, between the Salzkammergut lakes and the Totes Gebirge. The emblem is the Traunstein (1,691 m), rising steeply straight out of Lake Traunsee above Gmunden; its south-west ridge with the Gmundnerweg is a classic, very exposed full-day climb of around 350 m with bolted belays and views over the lake, ending near the Traunsteinhütte. Around it, the Upper Austrian Prealps hold many smaller sport crags, while the Salzkammergut mountains and the vast karst plateau of the Totes Gebirge add longer alpine limestone routes.

The Traunstein is reached via the A1 and Gmunden to the car parks on the east shore of the lake, which are scarce and time-limited in summer, or by train and boat. Sunny walls get very hot in midsummer, so spring and autumn are often the best time at lower crags.

Part of Austria, Upper Austria has 57 via ferrata routes documented on climbing.place. Explore its 3 areas below.
