The Winkelturm Ostgrat-Klettersteig, also known as Torre Clampil, is a captivating via ferrata nestled in the breathtaking Carnic Alps, straddling the border between Austria and Italy. Graded B/C, it offers a challenging yet highly rewarding experience.
While predominantly offering moderately difficult sections (B) with good cable protection and strategic iron rungs, it also features more demanding parts (C) that require greater strength, a steady head for heights, and some athletic moves, especially on steeper, more exposed rock faces. Climbers can expect a varied ascent, alternating between exposed traverses, short vertical sections, and sections along the distinctive East Ridge.
The climb itself is highly scenic. As you ascend, the panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and valleys are simply spectacular, growing more expansive with every meter gained. It's an ideal route for those with some prior via ferrata experience looking to push themselves slightly beyond an easy grade. Proper equipment – a helmet, harness, and a certified via ferrata set – is absolutely essential, and gloves are highly recommended for comfort.
Upon reaching the summit of Winkelturm/Torre Clampil, the sense of accomplishment is immense. The descent typically follows a marked hiking path, allowing for reflection on the exhilarating climb. This Klettersteig promises an unforgettable adventure, combining physical challenge with unparalleled alpine beauty.
