Climbing 'Gamma (1) al Pizzo d'Erna' is an exhilarating experience on a classic via ferrata, located on the Pizzo d'Erna massif near Lecco, Italy. Graded C, this route is considered moderately difficult, making it suitable for experienced beginners or intermediate climbers with a good head for heights and solid physical conditioning. The 'Gamma 1' ascent is characterized by a series of exposed sections, vertical climbs, and several impressive ladders, most notably the 'Scala delle Vasche' (Ladders of the Basins), all secured by steel cables and artificial aids. While not overly athletic, its sustained exposure and airy passages provide a thrilling challenge. Climbers are consistently rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of Lake Como, the city of Lecco, and the surrounding Grigna mountain range. The rock can be slippery in parts, especially after rain, adding to the route's demands. After reaching the summit area of Piani d'Erna, one can enjoy refreshments at the mountain huts. The descent is typically made via the comfortable cable car back down to Piazzale della Funivia, or by choosing one of the various hiking trails. Essential safety equipment includes a helmet, harness, and a via ferrata set.
