Annie Sanders Named Athlete of the Week After Stunning Gold Medal Performance in Wujiang

American climbing prodigy Annie Sanders has been officially crowned the Athlete of the Week following a spectacular, nail-biting performance at the World Climbing Series opener in Wujiang, China. The 18-year-old secured the honor via a public fan poll, capping off one of the most memorable weekends of her young career.

Edging Out the G.O.A.T. and the Fans' Vote

Sanders’ Athlete of the Week nod wasn't just a walk in the park. She faced stiff competition not only on the wall but also in the voting booths. In the social media poll, Sanders captured 42% of the total vote, beating out French climber Victor Guillermin (28%), China's newly-minted men’s Speed world record holder Yicheng Zhao (24%), and Poland’s Aleksandra Kalucka (6%).

The voting surge followed her masterclass in the Lead discipline final, where she went head-to-head with Slovenia's two-time Olympic champion and climbing legend, Janja Garnbret.

A Dramatic Finish Against the Clock

The women's final in Wujiang was a tale of contrasting styles. While Garnbret moved with her signature fluid, rapid pace, Sanders took a more deliberate, methodical approach. As the clock wound down, both climbers ultimately fell on the exact same move, ending with identical scores of 43+.

However, because Sanders had topped the standings in the semi-final round, she held the crucial countback tiebreaker. In the final five seconds of her route, knowing she was out of time, Sanders took a dramatic leap toward the top hold. That clutch effort secured her the gold medal and denied Garnbret her historic 50th World Series victory.

"I wasn't entirely sure I finished in the time limit, and wasn't sure if I had won or not, but once I saw the score I realized and got super overwhelmed," Sanders said after descending the wall. "It was a slow and static route and honestly, I was a bit nervous, so I was over-gripping a lot. But I got a bit back right at the top and it paid off."
