The Glockner Group in the Hohe Tauern is crowned by the Großglockner (3,798 m), Austria's highest mountain, and most climbers come here for the high-alpine ascent of the summit itself. Around it, crystalline slabs and boulders offer shorter rock climbing in a spectacular glacier setting – sectors such as the Gletscherseeplatten, the Grünsteinfindling, the Grüne Rettenwand or the Schwarze Platte. On the East Tyrolean side, Kals am Großglockner has a new climbing garden within sight of the Großglockner, and directly behind the Lucknerhaus, the base for the Glockner ascent, there are 33 routes and five multi-pitch routes from 3+ to 8-.
The Lucknerhaus is reached by the Kalser Glocknerstraße from Kals, and the Salzburg side by the Großglockner High Alpine Road. At this altitude, weather changes fast and snow can linger into early summer, so the season runs mainly from June to September.
Part of Tyrol, Glockner Group has 82 routes documented on climbing.place. Routes range from grade 2 to 8-. Explore its 10 crags and sectors below.
Often climbed in June, August, September.
