Climbing the Klettersteig Hanauerstein (D/E) is a serious undertaking reserved for highly experienced via ferrata enthusiasts. Graded D/E, it signifies an extreme level of difficulty, placing it among the most demanding fixed-rope routes in the Alps. Climbers should expect very long, consistently exposed sections, often vertical to severely overhanging rock faces, requiring exceptional upper body strength, stamina, and mental fortitude.
The route is characterized by very sparse and small footholds, with steel rungs sometimes few and far between, demanding precise footwork and confident use of rock features. The exposure is relentless, offering breathtaking but dizzying panoramic views of the Berchtesgaden Alps. It's a true test of nerve and physical prowess.
Only climbers with a solid background in D-rated via ferratas or higher, excellent physical condition, and a complete, high-quality via ferrata equipment (helmet, harness, modern via ferrata set with fall absorber, gloves, and possibly a short rope for partner belaying in emergencies) should attempt this route. It is absolutely not suitable for beginners or those seeking a casual mountain experience. Successfully completing the Hanauerstein D/E is a significant achievement, rewarding climbers with an immense sense of accomplishment and unforgettable alpine scenery.
