The Watzmann Überschreitung Klettersteig is a classic and challenging alpine route in the Bavarian Alps. Rated B, it demands a good level of fitness, via ferrata experience, and surefootedness. The route traverses all three main peaks of the Watzmann: Hocheck (2,651 m), Mittelspitze (2,713 m), and Südspitze (2,712 m). The Südspitze is the highest and most exposed. While the climbing itself isn't overly difficult, the exposure is significant throughout, and the length of the tour (typically 8-12 hours) is a major factor. The views are absolutely breathtaking, offering stunning panoramas of the surrounding Alps and valleys. Sections involve scrambling, exposed traverses, and ladder climbs. Weather conditions can change rapidly at this altitude, so it's crucial to check the forecast beforehand and be prepared for rain, snow, or thunderstorms. Adequate equipment, including a helmet, via ferrata set, sturdy hiking boots, appropriate clothing layers, and sufficient food and water, is essential. It is highly recommended to undertake this climb with an experienced mountain guide, especially for those new to alpine via ferratas or unfamiliar with the terrain.
