The Hoher Stein (723 m) is a rocky summit in the Dunkelstein Forest high above the Danube on the southern side of the Wachau, with fine views over the river. Its walls are 5–80 m high and spread over about ten sectors facing every direction, so there is sun or shade at almost any time of day; the rock is good to very good and mostly bolted, often with lower-offs, and some routes on the west wall are multi-pitch. The sectors include the Südwand, Wildtöter, Flugdrachenfelsen, Trabant and the Schatzinsel.
Access is via Mautern and Mitterarnsdorf to the car park at the Dürnbach bridge (partly on a gravel road), from where the crag is about 20 minutes' walk. The easier west-facing routes carry a lot of lichen and should only be climbed when completely dry; the short Hoher Stein Steig via ferrata can be used to descend from the long west-wall routes. The area is considered family-friendly.
Part of Wachau / Waldviertel, Hoher Stein has 91 routes documented on climbing.place. Routes range from grade 4 to 9+/10-. Explore its 8 crags and sectors below.
Often climbed in April, May, June.
