Climbing 'Rainman' on the Trogkofel's North Face (Nordwand) is an experience that truly lingers. Graded a solid VI UIAA (equivalent to a sustained Grade 6), this route is a cherished classic for good reason. It offers a fantastic journey up the imposing Nordwand, characterized by consistently engaging climbing on mostly solid rock, though some sections demand careful holds and a keen eye for the best line.
The route traverses interesting slabs, challenging cracks, and sometimes highly exposed sections that test your nerve and technique. The exposure on the higher pitches is breathtaking, with panoramic views opening up over the vast Carnic Alps. While the grade '6' might sound moderate to some sport climbers, Rainman's sustained nature, the length of the climb, and the remote alpine environment make it feel like a significant undertaking.
Reaching the summit, with the expansive landscape stretching around you, is an immensely rewarding feeling. 'Rainman' isn't just a climb; it's a full-day adventure that requires good route-finding skills, a solid lead climber, and a deep appreciation for traditional alpine climbing in one of the Dolomites' most beautiful, yet wild, corners.
